Serendipity in the Sun: A First-Time Road Trip to Mermaid Beach QLD

A wide-angle candid shot of Caroline and Monte playing on a sandy beach. Caroline, wearing a burnt orange shirt and denim capris, is bent over with her hands out toward Monte, who is a dark silhouette against the sand, looking up at her excitedly. In the background, white waves crash against a blue ocean under a bright sky.

Travel is full of “firsts,” but our August 2023 trip to Queensland was a major milestone. I had only picked up my new car the day before, and Monte was just a little over a year old. As a new “dog mum,” I was equal parts excited and nervous.

I took my research to the next level because I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. I wanted a place that felt like a true home away from home, and I found it at Seabreeze Villa.

🐾 Monte’s Verdict: Seabreeze Villa, Mermaid Beach

A true “Dog-Friendly” sanctuary, that actually lives up to the photos. Total privacy, security, and beach vibes.

  • Vibe: Instant “home away from home” feel. Super cute, functional, and private.
  • The Highlight: The secure, wrap-around yard with fairy lights (perfect for late-night zoomies and wine).
  • Would we go back? In a heartbeat. This is the gold standard for villa stays with a pup.

The Serendipity Standard: Just a quick note that this review is 100% independent. We paid for our stay in full, and all opinions (and wagging tails) are entirely our own.

Depending on stops, the drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast is just under 9 hours. I had the car packed and ready for an early start, but when I woke up at 2 AM and couldn’t get back to sleep, we decided to just hit the road.

It was the best decision we made! The roads were empty, and Monte was a dream. He slept nearly the whole way, only waking up for bathroom breaks every 2 – 2.5 hours. For his first big road trip, he was a total natural.

We arrived bright and early and headed straight to Sunnyboy Espresso for a bite to eat. This little gem became our daily ritual.

  • The Strategy: We would walk all the way there along Murmaid Beach. By the time we arrived, Monte was tired out from the sand and surf, meaning he was perfectly settled and happy to snooze while we enjoyed our breakfast.

When we saw the pictures of Seabreeze Villa online, I knew it was the one, but seeing it in person was even better.

  • The Layout: Having parking right at your front door makes unloading a dog-filled car so much easier.
  • The Yard: The wrap-around yard is completely secure, which is every dog owner’s dream. My favorite memory is sitting out there under the fairy lights with a glass of wine and a cheese board while Monte played safely on the grass.

To make sure I could actually relax, I brought a few essentials to create boundaries for Monte:

  1. The “Bedroom”: We brought his crate from home, his safe space, along with his blanky and his favorite sleeping buddy, his teddy.
  2. The Playpen Hack: I picked up a cheap playpen from Kmart to set up a dedicated “Monte zone.” This allowed me to contain him in small sections where I could keep an eye on him, ensuring he didn’t nibble on anything he shouldn’t while I was unpacking or relaxing.
  3. The Longline Freedom: One of my favorite moments was watching him on his longline at the beach. It gave him the space to explore, sniff, and zoom through the sand while staying secure. You could actually see his confidence growing; he looked so proud feeling “all grown up” and independent as he discovered the ocean for the first time.

Because he had that perfect mix of mental stimulation and the physical exercise of the beach walks, the payoff was a dream. By the time we got back to the villa, he was so content and worn out that he would happily snooze away in his pen.

He did give me the best laugh, though. Being Austrian, I have seen plenty of Schnitzels in my time, but Monte invented his own version. Within minutes of hitting the sand, he had officially “crumbed” himself from head to tail. He seemed so proud of his new look as a Sand Schnitzel. Thankfully, the villa has a fully functional hot and cold shower in the courtyard. It made it a total breeze to “de-schnitzel” him before he headed inside!
