Slow Art

Inside the Studio

I believe the best work comes from truly seeing the world first. Right now, I’m spending my time walking and watching. The sketching will follow when the rhythm feels right.

Art, much like a good dog walk, cannot be rushed. While Monte leads the way through our daily Australian neighbourhood adventures, I am documenting the quiet magic found at the end of the leash.

I am currently in the “slow” part of the process, – the quiet space between our walks and the first pencil mark. After a long break from drawing, I am taking the time to simply observe. I gather moments from our daily loops and envisioning how they will find their way onto paper.

What starts as a stroll past local gum and pine trees is becoming the foundation. It is the start of a collection of loose pencil sketches, watercolor studies, and handcrafted greeting cards. I am relearning the weight of the pencil and the flow of the wash, one trail at a time.

Inspired by the places Monte leads me – from the morning frost on the local oval to the hidden scent trails in the scrub

My creative process often begins at the front door.

After years away from the brushes, I have returned to them with a new focus: the beauty of the everyday.

My work is an exploration of the trails I walk daily. I am capturing the shifting light on the bark, the local birdlife, and the constant, wagging presence of my field companion, Monte.

top-down, flat-lay photograph on a timber desk. A spiral-bound sketchbook shows a loose pencil sketch of Monte, a Miniature American Shepherd, sitting in a wooded trail. A wooden pencil and a Faber-Castell eraser rest on the page. Above the sketch, a smartphone in a blue flip case displays a vibrant reference photo of Monte in the sun. A green box of Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils sits in the top right corner.

Stay Tuned

I will be sharing the first sketches and watercolor studies as they emerge from my walks with Monte. If you would like to follow our progress from the trail to the drawing board, I would love for you to subscribe via Substack or simply follow us on Instagram Mon.te.caro.

One walk, one sketch, one day at a time.
Thanks for stopping by while I get things started, – I hope you find a moment of “slow” in your own day today.
