Looking back to August 2022, I vastly underestimated how challenging it would be to select Monte’s first harness. You would think having endless options on the market would make it easy, but wading through the sheer wall of choices to find something practical, secure, and comfortable for a slender, active puppy was a lot harder than I anticipated.

In those initial weeks, a simple collar and lead were all we needed while we navigated the ins and outs of puppy housetraining at home. However, as we started venturing out, having something safe and secure became non-negotiable, especially since car safety has always been a top priority for me.

If you love soft fabric choices with pretty prints, the options out there seem almost endless. But for an active herding breed, I didn’t feel those overly decorative styles were fitting or practical for Monte. I was looking for something stylish and functional.

Monte’s slender frame at the time made the search even trickier. Most options we tried felt cumbersome to put on, or he managed to back out of them like a little Houdini. The search was finally over when we took a trip to Petstock and tried on the Rogz Urban Fast-Fit Harness.

Sizing & The Step-In Experience

While this harness is officially marketed as ‘adjustable,’ the actual adjustment range is quite limited. It is designed more for fine-tuning the fit for comfort rather than accommodating a growing puppy over time.

Because of that limited adjustment window, taking Monte into Petstock to physically try on the different sizes was absolutely essential. We eventually settled on the S/M (38–44cm). Once we had the right fit, the simple step-in layout made getting him ready for car rides a total breeze – no wrestling a harness over his head or struggling with complex straps.

Most importantly, Monte never minded having it put on, nor did he once manage to back out of it.

Comfort & Everyday Practicality

Back then, my main focus was finding something soft, secure, and comfortable that Monte wouldn’t fight me on. Bulky designs often felt too restrictive on him, but the Rogz Fast-Fit sat lightly across his slender chest without feeling overwhelming.

It proved to be practical for our daily outings, giving him plenty of comfort whether we were practicing early footwork in training or getting him in and out of the car. While shoulder clearance and biomechanics eventually became top priorities for me further down the track, back then, simply finding a comfortable harness that he didn’t hate putting on was a massive win!

Style & Care

We chose the Dove Grey Harness with a matching collar and lead. The standout design element for me was the rose gold hardware, which looked ever so stylish against the soft grey fabric.

One drawback that came with the softer material and lighter colour, though, was that I had to be very mindful of when and where we used it – so much so that it quickly became our dedicated “going out” harness.

It was strictly reserved for dry-weather training sessions, road trips, and suburban outings rather than tumbling through mud or park play. Because we kept it for cleaner adventures, the set stayed in pristine condition right up until Monte eventually outgrew it. In fact, I still have it to this day because it is such a beautiful and unique set.

KEEP IN MIND & REAL-WORLD CAVEATS

• The “Pristine Fabric” Dilemma: The soft, stylish fabric looks beautiful, but if you value keeping it looking pristine, you will find yourself constantly worrying about it getting manky in wet or muddy conditions.
• Minimal Adjustment Range: While marketed as adjustable, the adjustment options are subtle. It works brilliantly for fine-tuning comfort on a fully grown dog, but it won’t act as a “grow-with-me” harness for a developing puppy.
• The Non-Mainstream Fit Challenge: If you own a MAS or another non-mainstream breed with unique proportions, finding a standard harness that fits off the rack is tricky. While far from a forever setup, this was one of the few options that actually suited Monte’s slender frame at the time.

Would I buy it again? Yes. While Monte eventually outgrew the fixed fit, the durability and hardware quality are undeniable – and back then, it was simply the best-fitting, most secure option we could find for his build.
