When Monte started to outgrow his Rogz Urban Fast-Fit step-in harness, I began the search for his ‘forever’ setup. He was no longer a tiny puppy, and with his adult frame filling out, I felt confident that a standard harness cut would work well for him.

My criteria hadn’t changed: I wanted something functional that wouldn’t restrict his shoulder blades, offered plenty of adjustability in case he filled out further, and brought a touch of style. That is when I stumbled across The Furry Nomad.

What instantly caught my eye online was their waterproof collar and multi-way leash paired with a soft chest harness. Having a wipe-clean lead sounded like a dream for approaching winter weather when washing and drying traditional fabric leads becomes a constant chore. Since the brand wasn’t available in local shops, I measured Monte carefully, followed their website guidelines, and settled on a Size Small.

Unboxing, Fit & Over-The-Head Training

When the package arrived, the quality did not disappoint. The rich Chocolate Brown shade complemented Monte’s mahogany coat beautifully. The harness itself features a soft, padded chest panel that felt gentle against his coat without adding unnecessary weight across his shoulders.

Unlike his previous step-in harness, this was Monte’s very first over-the-head style. To make the transition seamless, I took things slowly. I held a favourite treat on the other side of the neck loop so he would voluntarily push his snout through, turning the fitting into a positive, co-operative game.

While I was able to adjust the chest straps easily, I always felt the front chest plate sat just a little too high on Monte’s stature. Even with fine-tuning, the high cut never quite sat where I wanted it to across his front, which was likely a big reason neither he nor I ever fully warmed to this harness design.

The true highlight of this kit is the waterproof collar and multi-functional leash. Made from a smooth, dirt-resistant coated material, the lead doesn’t absorb water or mud – a simple wipe down with a towel and it is completely dry and fresh. While the soft fabric harness still takes time to dry if soaked, having a lead that never gets soggy or holds damp smells is fantastic for rainy days.

However, a few design choices and hardware details missed the mark for us:

• Awkward Lead Ergonomics: I liked the idea of a multi-functional lead, but this execution felt clumsy in hand. Instead of a dedicated handle, you form a loop by clipping back onto a designated D-ring. Because that D-ring sits so close to the end, the large, heavy metal clip rests directly inside your grip. Having that extra weight dangling right where your hand holds the lead feels bulky rather than practical or comfortable.
• Belt Buckle vs. Quick-Release Clip: The collar features a traditional belt-style tongue buckle rather than a quick-release clip. While it looks neat, threading a strap through loops and aligning a prong into pre-punched holes when Monte is eager to get out for a walk gets frustrating fast. A clip-style collar with smooth, infinite sliding adjustment allows for a much more precise fit, whereas fixed prong holes force you to choose between slightly too tight or slightly too loose.

Between the bulky lead design, the belt collar, and the high-cut chest plate, Monte often felt a little too restricted compared to minimalist setups.

3-Year Durability: The Beach & Rain Go-To

While it didn’t end up becoming our primary staple for daily walks, the leash earned a permanent place as our designated beach and rainy-day setup.

Three years later, after countless adventures and multiple harness washes, the entire set still looks practically brand new. The craftsmanship and material durability are outstanding – it simply refuses to wear out.

Would I buy it again? Probably not – but that is purely down to Monte’s size, the high chest cut, and personal preference with the leash design and belt collar. The hardware weight and buckle features were just a little too awkward for our daily needs, though the quality itself is undeniable.

If you have a medium-to-large dog or want a dedicated rainy-day set with a wipe-clean lead, a kit like The Furry Nomad offers superb build quality. For finer-boned dogs under 10kg, the high-cut chest panel, belt-style collar, and heavy leash hardware might feel a touch cumbersome for everyday use, but as a dedicated beach and rain setup, it is virtually indestructible.
