Modern Pets Heavy Duty 8-Panel Enclosure: The “Ugly Cousin”

A fluffy grey and white cat sits on polished timber floorboards, looking through a black wire octagonal puppy playpen. Inside the pen, a brown puppy is resting in a grey plush dog bed. A wooden elevated stand holding two stainless steel bowls is positioned near the pen's gate. Bunnings clear PVC floor protection hack for the dog pen on hardwood floors.

If my wooden playpen is the Stylish Sanctuary of the house, this metal version is definitely its “Ugly Cousin.” Living in a tri-level home, one pen just wasn’t going to cut it. While I adore our wooden model for our main living area, I needed a secondary, budget-friendly solution for the lower level. I knew Monte wouldn’t be spending an eternity in this one, so I wasn’t looking for a “forever” piece of furniture, I was looking for pure utility.

I scoured the secondhand market and found this one in “as new” condition for an absolute fraction of the retail price. However, even with a bargain price, the performance has been a mixed bag.

Let’s be honest: compared to the wooden version, this one is an eyesore. It has an industrial look that screams function over form. Nevertheless, it has one major advantage: Height. This heavy duty dog playpen comes in two sizes, and I ended up with the 1m tall version. If you have a larger breed puppy or a “jumper,” this extra height is a total game-changer. It is much more secure than the standard 80cm models.

Here is where the “heavy-duty” label hits a snag. It is marketed as an indoor/outdoor item. Unfortunately, even though it stays indoors, the coating has started to flake and rust is creeping in. I would recommend a quick spray of clear rust-inhibitor if you plan to use this in a high-moisture area or anywhere near a coastal breeze. It is a bit disappointing compared to the wooden sanctuary upstairs, which looks pristine after two full puppy upbringings. It is a solid “workhorse” for now, but it definitely lacks that “built-to-last” polish of its wooden sibling.

Despite the rust concerns, it is a solid, heavy-duty piece. The rounded corners are a thoughtful touch for safety, and the 8-panel design means you can configure it into almost any shape, rectangle, square, or octagon, to fit your space.

Protecting hardwood floors from a puppy is a challenge. Initially, I tried waterproof pet blankets, but the laundry cycle was a pain. In the end, I found two ultimate hacks:

The Budget-Friendly Fix: A $3 Flannel-Backed Vinyl Tablecloth from Kmart. It is wipeable, durable, and the flannel backing provides a non-slip grip on timber floors.

The Professional Choice: For a truly seamless look, head to Bunnings for their Clear PVC Film Tablecloth. It is incredibly easy to cut to the exact footprint of your pen. This makes it virtually invisible while protecting your floors.

  • Height Options: The 1m height is fantastic for larger breeds or adventurous puppies.
  • Multiple Configurations: It is super easy to adapt to weirdly shaped rooms.
  • Budget-Friendly: You can almost always find these on Marketplace or Gumtree for a bargain.
  • Solid Build: It feels sturdy and stays put, unlike lighter wire versions.

If you need a taller boundary for a big pup, or a versatile enclosure you don’t mind getting a bit “lived in,” this is a good choice. Just be sure to avoid leaving it outside! It is a functional, solid item, but if you are looking for long-term durability and “living room chic,” stick to their wooden version.

Full Disclosure: Not sponsored! Just another secondhand score for Monte’s multi-level empire.

What about you? Do you have a “utility” pet item that isn’t the prettiest but gets the job done? Or have you had better luck with “outdoor” metal pens? Let’s swap notes in the comments!
