Modern Pets Heavy Duty 8-Panel Enclosure: The “Ugly Cousin”

THE FOUNDATION: Dog Playpen – Heavy Duty 8 Panel Enclosure

If my wooden playpen is the ultimate living room sanctuary, this metal version is definitely its industrial “Ugly Cousin.” (If you haven’t seen how we styled our main living area, you can read my full Modern Pets Wooden Dog Pen Review first to see why we fell in love with it).

Living in a tri-level home, one pen just wasn’t going to cut it. While I adore our wooden model for our main living area, I needed a secondary, budget-friendly solution for the lower level. I knew Monte wouldn’t be spending an eternity in this one, so I wasn’t looking for a permanent piece of furniture, I was looking for pure utility.

I scoured the secondhand market and found this one in “as new” condition for an absolute fraction of the retail price. However, even with a bargain price, the performance has been a mixed bag.

The Industrial Aesthetic vs. The Taller Boundary

Let’s be honest: compared to the wooden sibling upstairs, this one is an eyesore. It has a stark, heavy metal look that screams function over form.

Nevertheless, it has one major advantage: Height. This heavy duty dog playpen comes in two sizes, and I ended up with the 100cm tall version. If you have a larger breed puppy or a “jumper,” this extra height is a total game-changer. It is much more secure than the standard 80cm models on the market.

The Durability Check: Hammerite Coating Under Pressure

Here is where the “heavy-duty” label hits a snag. It is marketed as an indoor/outdoor item.

Unfortunately, even though ours has stayed strictly indoors, the black coating has started to flake away in places and rust is creeping in. If you plan to use this enclosure in a high-moisture area, outside on a patio, or anywhere near a coastal breeze, I highly recommend hitting it with a quick spray of clear rust-inhibitor before setting it up. It is a bit disappointing compared to the wooden sanctuary upstairs, which looks pristine after two full puppy upbringings. It is a solid “workhorse” for now, but it definitely lacks that “built-to-last” polish of its wooden sibling.

Reconfiguration & Safety Wins

Despite the surface rust concerns, the structural build itself remains incredibly solid. The panels stay firmly anchored in place, which is a massive relief compared to flimsy, lightweight wire options that slide across the room when a pup leans on them.

The rounded corners are a thoughtful touch for safety, and the 8-panel design means you can configure it into almost any shape, rectangle, square, or octagon, to fit your space.

THE MonteCaro FLOOR-PROTECTOR HACK

Just like with our upstairs setup, protecting polished timber floors from a young puppy is a challenge. Initially, I tried using waterproof pet blankets, but the constant laundry cycle quickly became a total pain. In the end, I discovered two ultimate floor hacks:

The Budget-Friendly Fix: A $3 Flannel-Backed Vinyl Tablecloth from Kmart. It is wipeable, durable, has a soft flannel backing, and it also provides a non-slip grip on timber floors.

The Seamless Professional Choice: For a truly seamless look, head to Bunnings for their Clear PVC Film Tablecloth. It is incredibly easy to cut to the exact footprint of your pen. This makes it virtually invisible while protecting your floors.

The Core Practical Takeaways

  • Superior Height Options: The 100cm height is fantastic for larger breeds or adventurous puppies.
  • Multiple Configurations: The modular panels make it incredibly simple to adapt the frame to awkward spaces.
  • Budget-Friendly Find: These are a total marketplace staple; you can almost always find them second-hand on Gumtree or Marketplace for a bargain.
  • Sturdy Frame: Unlike light wire alternatives, the weight of this metal helps to stays where you put it.
  • Coating Weakness: The exterior finish can flake over time, meaning you will need to keep it away from direct outdoor elements to prevent rust.

The Bottom Line

If you need a taller, robust boundary for a big pup, or a versatile enclosure you don’t mind getting a bit “lived in,” this is a solid, functional choice. Just don’t let the marketing convince you to leave it out in the weather! If you are hunting for long-term premium durability and “living room chic,” stick to their gorgeous wooden version instead.
