Part 8: How To Pick the Perfect Forever Dog Bed | Monte’s Dog Bed Portfolio

If you had told me five years ago that Monte would eventually curate his own multi-level “bed portfolio” across the house, I probably would have laughed.

When Monte was a pup, things were simple: you buy a budget-friendly, fluffy bed, accept that it will get chewed, and move on. But once you survive the teething phase and your dog’s true personality and quirky sleeping habits emerge, finding the perfect permanent setup becomes surprisingly high stakes.

Figuring out Monte’s ultimate sanctuaries required quite a bit of research. From budget-friendly workhorses that nearly ruined my washing machine to the literal “Rolls-Royce” statement piece, – here is our battle-tested review of Monte’s personal collection, and how to find your own pup’s true forever bed.

The Puppy Chronicles: Surviving the Shark Teeth

If you have followed along in our chronicles, you are aware that Monte’s initial setup involved a playpen. During those early months, my main objective was to stick to budget options where possible. He originally slept inside his travel crate, where I tucked a cheap and cheerful Kmart bed, and during the night, he slept in a soft travel crate right next to my bed. At that stage, you just need something functional that survives the inevitable puppy messes until it eventually needs to be retired.

As he grew a little bigger, he graduated to a larger, budget-friendly, fluffy Kmart bed for the colder months. But when the teething phase arrived and those little teeth turned into shark bites, I promptly switched him to a tough, canvas, bite-resistant Kmart bed. If you haven’t seen it in my previous posts, it has truly stood the test of time. We are now in year five, and that basic canvas piece is still going strong in our rotation.

But once you pass that final stage and your pup hasn’t completely claimed a permanent piece of human furniture, at which point no luxury dog bed will do the persuading, it is time to talk about long-term investments.

Building the ‘Bed Portfolio’

Because our home is a tri-level, it made practical sense to ensure Monte had a cosy setup in each section of the house he could claim as his own. This was the birth of his famous ‘bed portfolio.’

Similar to our raw food journey, I found myself having to come to terms with what quality dog beds actually cost. It is safe to say that this is another one of those areas where you truly get what you pay for.

Here is how Monte’s current portfolio tracks, from daily workhorses to luxury statement pieces:

1. The Entry-Level Orthopaedic: Pawz Dog Memory Foam Mattress

When my budget threshold was still on the lower end, I purchased his first ‘big boy’ bed: the Pawz Dog Memory Foam Mattress. This bed has a removable and washable cover that still claims a dedicated spot in our house today.

Because Monte is only four years old, hardly a senior dog, and weighs in at around 10 kg, I can’t truly comment on the memory foam mattress claims. What I can say is that the inner foam appears to be of fantastic quality. It has definitely held its structural shape and hasn’t “pancaked” a bit over time.

The mattress itself actually has some real weight to it, which provided an unexpected puppy-proofing benefit: it was simply too heavy for Monte to flip over when he was looking to nibble on the underside again. Denied access to the bottom, he channelled his creativity elsewhere and managed to chew off the nice leather accent handle, which I have since had to remove entirely.

  • The Verdict: It is mainly used as a daytime hangout spot, much like the Kmart canvas bed, and it is equally hot property for my two cats.
  • The Wash Test: While the main memory foam insert slides out easily, the removable outer cover actually has some built-in, sewn-in stuffing along the top layer that can’t be taken out before washing. Naturally, after several trips through the wash cycles over the years, that particular section has become a little lumpy. However, I have always managed to patiently massage and spread the stuffing back out reasonably well once the cover is completely dry.
  • The Catch: The little non-slip dots on the bottom of the bed remain my only real quarrel, and unfortunately, it is a dealbreaker that would stop me from buying this particular bed again. They don’t actually stop the mattress from sliding around. Instead, they just shed continuously in the wash, creating an absolute fiasco by getting stuck all over the inside of my washing machine drum. Now that most of them have finally washed off the cycle is fine, but it is a major design flaw to keep in mind.

2. The Functional Upgrade: Pawz Calming Donut Bed

Next came an upgrade from our initial Kmart puppy donut bed. Standard versions without removable covers tend to get lumpy and smelly quickly, and they are simply too cumbersome to wash and dry successfully.

I can’t actually comment on the ‘calming’ effect of the design, purely because Monte has never been an anxious dog. What I can say with certainty is that he absolutely loves snuggling up in it every single night, and it is also one of our go-to beds to pack whenever we travel.

  • The Verdict: The Pawz Calming Pet Bed with the removable cover is a total winner. The true washability factor comes down to a practical design choice: the shaggy faux-fur cover unzips completely from the bottom, allowing you to easily take out the two separate internal white cushion inserts – the large outer ring bolster and the round centre cushion.
  • The Wash Test: Because you only throw the empty outer cover straight into the washing machine, the internal stuffing is never subjected to the drum’s spin cycle, completely eliminating the clumpiness that usually ruins cheap pet beds.
  • The Long-Term Wear: It has held up incredibly well; even after more than three years of regular wash cycles, the cover hasn’t matted at all. I just give the fabric a light brush once it is completely dry, and it still looks almost as thick and fluffy as the day we bought it.

That is a seriously tall order for a well-loved bed that has been used every single night! They also run frequent sales, making it excellent value for a bed that truly stands the test of time.

3. The Premium Modular Choice: Omlet Topology Bed with Bolster Topper

While both of the above options are highly practical, I wouldn’t necessarily consider them aesthetically pleasing from an interior design perspective. I wanted options that complemented the home, and I quickly realised that if style comes into the equation, you need to dig a little deeper.

The Omlet Topology Bed with Bolster Topper is, and has remained, my all-time favourite bed. I am a massive fan of customisation and versatility. Omlet allowed you to select different legs to seamlessly match your interior; I chose sleek metal legs for one base and warm wooden ones for another. You could also choose from a beautiful array of fabric colours. I went with a neutral grey for my studio setup, and a earthy golden-yellow for the beanbag cover because it went so beautifully with our decor.

The fabric quality is second to none; it is incredibly heavy-duty and robust. Even my cats haven’t managed to tear a single thread.

The Engineering Standout: The Zipper & Inlet System

The absolute engineering triumph of this bed, and what makes the design genuinely amazing – is the exceptionally clever zipper track system used to swap the interchangeable toppers.

  • Fully Hidden Track: When a topper is zipped onto the grey fabric base, the entire heavy-duty plastic and metal zipper line is fully concealed beneath a thick fabric overhang. The flap lays completely flat, hiding the pull tabs entirely out of sight. It means Monte has never had any funny ideas about trying to nibble on the metal bits.
  • Effortless Cleaning: When it comes to the dreaded cleaning day, the design makes maintenance incredibly straightforward. The covers come apart completely, allowing you to quickly wash the outer fabric without dealing with any bulky inner stuffing, which speeds up drying time significantly.
  • Smart Removable Inlets: On the yellow beanbag topper, the underside unzips to reveal a separate white fabric bag that contains the loose beans, allowing it to slide out as one neat piece. The exact same brilliant logic applies to the bolster topper, which unzips completely from the bottom so the structured, protective white-lined foam inserts can just slide right out before the outer casing goes into the wash.

Even all these years later, they still look brand new. Rotating the toppers frequently keeps the spaces feeling fresh.

To my absolute shock, Omlet has discontinued dog beds from their Australian range. It feels like an incredible loss; I genuinely fail to understand how a product with such clever design and exceptional brand quality could be pulled from the market. I haven’t found an equivalent concept since.

  • The Setup: Our Omlet collection includes the luxury super-soft blanket, the cooling mat, the Topology Beanbag Topper in yellow, and the Topology Bolster and a Flat Topper in grey.
  • The Verdict: Monte absolutely loves this bed and all its interchangeable options. He utilises the raised bolster edges we set up in the studio to snooze and observe the room during the days I work from home, and enthusiastically dives straight into the beanbag topper in the living room every single night before bed.

THE MonteCaro HACK

I was lucky enough to score a second raised bolster edge topper as-new on FB Marketplace.

Now I have a few different toppers that I rotate across the two beds, and if one isn’t being used on a bed base, I simply pop it directly onto the sofa cushions. It creates a perfect, dedicated nesting zone right on the lounge, serving as a clever couch protector while giving Monte his own personal retreat every evening.

4. The Rolls-Royce of Dog Beds: The Ambient Lounge Bed

This brings us to Monte’s ultimate prime real estate, acquired back in 2023: the Ambient Lounge Medium Luxury Indoor/Outdoor Dog Bed in Cappuccino, paired with their premium ultra-bead filling system.

I actually spent a considerable amount of time researching this bed before buying it, back when it wasn’t nearly as heavily advertised as it is today. The sheer depth of thought that went into the design stood out to me at the time, the process felt very similar to the way I would research our high-quality human mattress.

The reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and I can happily report that it absolutely lives up to its quality promise. The fabric is extremely heavy-duty and robust without sacrificing an ounce of style. If you own a larger breed, this level of durability would be an absolute non-negotiable.

  • The Verdict: Coming in at just over $210 at the time with a discount code, this bed is a genuine statement piece. The construction quality is remarkable, it is easy on the eye, and it features versatile, zip-off covers. I really like the fact that I can switch the topper down the track, though I haven’t actually bought an additional topper option for this one just yet.
  • The Zippers themselves are of exceptional quality and feel incredibly robust. However, it’s worth noting that the system itself isn’t quite as clever as the Omlet Topology design. Unlike the Omlet bed, neither the zipper track nor the puller hide away out of sight. They remain exposed, which could easily become a real issue if you happen to have a dog that likes to nibble on things.
  • The Filling Evolution & The “Wear-In” Curve: Interestingly, it took Monte the longest to warm up to this bed because it arrived feeling quite stiff. In an effort to help it mould to his body better, I made the executive decision to unzip the chamber and take some of the loose foam beads out. In hindsight, this was a terrible idea. Those tiny beans were so incredibly static that the moment it opened, they developed a mind of their own and stuck to absolutely everything in sight.

For a small-to-medium dog like a Miniature American Shepherd, the initial ‘wear-in’ experience can definitely vary. Because they don’t have the heavy weight of a larger breed to force the bed down, it takes some time for the structural outer material to naturally soften up. However, once those beads finally settled and the fabric relaxed, Monte realised how beautifully it conformed to his body, and it quickly became his daytime sanctuary. Seeing him happily snoozing away in it now makes that initial investment entirely worth it.

Fortunately, if you are looking to buy this bed today, you likely won’t have to suffer through my bean-extracting nightmare or wait out the same wear-in period. Ambient Lounge has since completely overhauled their interior range, moving away from loose beads to a sophisticated Rebound Foam Mattress system. The new core features a human-grade foundation made of 70% high-density orthopaedic foam and a 30% memory foam topper layer. It is a upgrade that completely bypasses the static filling frustration while providing immediate, form-fitting joint support right out of the box. (I also read that they even sell the foam inserts separately if you want to upgrade an older bean base like mine)

The Space Factor: The only other major consideration is its footprint. This bed does not blend into the background or tuck neatly under a desk; it claims its space as a true piece of furniture. It is high, large, and proud.

What to Consider Before You Invest

If you are currently moving out of the puppy phase and looking to invest in a long-term bed for your dog, here are my practical essentials to consider before clicking ‘buy’:

  • Dog Size and Weight: Consider your dog’s actual build against the bed’s design. Heavy-duty structural fabrics and high-resistance fills need the weight of a larger breed to press them down. For a small-to-medium dog, a bed engineered for heavy weight can feel rigid, making the “wear-in” period take much longer. If your dog is on the lighter side, you don’t need a high-resistance system built for industrial load-bearing – look for responsive, body-conforming support instead.
  • Sleeping Styles Matter: Does your dog like to curl up and feel secure, or stretch out completely? Nesting dogs thrive in donut beds, while stretchers prefer flat orthopaedic mattresses.
  • The Washing Machine Test: Avoid buying a large dog bed unless the cover unzips completely. Forcing a fully stuffed bed into a standard domestic washing machine is a recipe for a broken appliance and a lumpy, ruined insert. Look for styles with separate, removable inner linings for the filling or foam to make wash days effortless.
  • The Zipper & Hardware Safety Check: Take a close look at how the fastening systems are designed. High-quality, robust zippers are essential for longevity, but they also pose a significant safety hazard. If you have a dog that likes to nibble or scratch at hardware, an exposed track or pull tab can easily be chewed off and ingested, leading to a dangerous foreign body blockage. Opting for designs with fully hidden zipper flaps is a critical safety feature that keeps curious teeth completely away from the hardware.
  • The Power of Spare Toppers: If you find a great modular system, consider investing in a spare topper or looking out for one on sale. Having a secondary piece allows you to keep the space fresh and clean while the other is in the wash.
  • Aesthetics vs. Utility: You don’t have to sacrifice your home’s decor for your dog’s comfort anymore. Look for brands that offer neutral palettes and high-quality fabrics that mimic premium human furniture, allowing the bed to blend seamlessly into your living spaces as a true piece of furniture.
