Monte’s Verdict 🐾: [THE CUT]

When you bring home a puppy, budget-friendly beds are often the name of the game.

But once you move past the chewing phase and your dog establishes their actual sleeping preferences, finding a reliable, long-standing bed for everyday use becomes much more important.

For us, that everyday holy grail has been the Pawz Calming Donut Bed. It forms a core part of Monte’s bed portfolio. It serves as his trusted sleeping spot every single night and comes along with us on our travels. After more than three years of heavy use, frequent washes, and life on the road, it has proven itself to be an absolute winner.

Why We Made the Upgrade

Monte’s early puppy days involved a standard, budget-friendly Kmart donut bed. While it worked well for a young pup, standard non-removable donut beds have a major flaw. They get lumpy, develop a distinct doggy odour over time, and are notoriously difficult to wash and dry successfully.

When it was time for an upgrade, I wanted something that offered that cosy, cocoon-like security without the laundry day nightmare.

While these beds are often marketed with ‘calming’ claims, Monte has never been an anxious dog, so I can’t speak to that specific benefit. What I can vouch for is how deeply he loves curling up in it night after night.

The Real Winner: Smart Design and True Washability

The true test of any pet bed is how it holds up in the wash. The Pawz Calming Donut Bed stands out because of its practical design: the shaggy faux-fur cover unzips completely from the bottom.

Instead of wrestling a massive, misshapen bed into your washing machine, the design allows you to easily unzip the bottom. You can take out two separate internal white cushion inserts, the large outer ring bolster and the round centre cushion.

  • The Wash Test: Because you are only putting the empty outer cover into the washing machine, the internal stuffing is never subjected to the harsh tumbling and spin cycle of the drum. This completely eliminates the clumpiness and permanent distortion that usually ruins cheap pet beds.
  • Long-Term Wear: Even after more than three years of regular wash cycles, the dark grey shaggy faux-fur hasn’t matted at all. Once the cover is completely dry, a quick, light brush brings the plush texture right back to life, leaving it looking almost as thick and fluffy as the day we bought it. That is a seriously tall order for a bed used every single night!

How the Inner Cushions Have Held Up Over Time

Given its everyday use, I am genuinely impressed by how well the internal stuffing has held up. Granted, the outer bolster ring is not quite as plump as it was on day one, but it has by no means deflated into a pancake.
It still holds its shape wonderfully to this day, creating that cozy nest effect that Monte loves to snuggle into at night.

The inner middle circle does require the occasional bit of “manipulation” to make sure the filling stays evenly spread out. The great thing is that you could easily do a little DIY job and add some extra stuffing down the track if need be.

Of course, context is key: Monte is just a little over 10 kg, so keep in mind that the life cycle of the inner stuffing might look a bit different if you have a larger or heavier breed putting it through its paces!

The Ultimate Travel Companion

Because it is lightweight, comfortable, and familiar, the Pawz donut bed is one of our go-to pieces to pack whenever we go on holidays. Having a familiar sleeping sanctuary makes overnight stays in new places a breeze for Monte, helping him settle down quickly no matter where we are.

The Final Verdict

Considering its price point, the Pawz Calming Donut Bed punches well above its weight. They also run frequent sales, making it exceptional value for money.

If you are looking for an alternative to standard non-washable donut beds, this one has genuinely stood the test of time for us. It strikes a great balance between everyday comfort and practical maintenance. Even after years of real-world testing, it remains a firm favourite here at home and on the road.
