Monte’s Verdict 🐾: [ THE CUT ]

If you have been following along with our journey, you might know that my search for the perfect harness continued after testing The Stylish Hound On Duty set. Reflecting on our experience and weighing up what worked well – and what didn’t quite hit the mark. I decided that, based on our active lifestyle and love for exploring trails, I was on the hunt for a more practical, secure option.

Since I was already so happy with The Stylish Hound’s multi-functional leash, there was no need to look for a new set. I could focus entirely on finding the right harness.

I have to admit that I am a bit old-school. If possible, I always try to purchase essentials like this in a shop rather than online. It is so crucial to get the fit right, especially given Monte is a Mini.
I generally start with online research and then hunt down a local shop that stocks the items so we can try them on.

For this particular purchase, you could say I went full circle.

While my very first harness for Monte was the Rogz Urban Fast-Fit, I ultimately returned to the same trusted brand, Rogz, for their more robust Rogz Utility Explore Harness.

The quality of this brand was outstanding from day one, so I had no doubts there. It was just a matter of ensuring the fit was perfect for him now. Petstock was one of the stores that stocked this range back in 2023. It wasn’t on sale when we first looked at it, but the staff were so lovely. They found a cheaper price online and ended up price-matching it for us. We recently purchased some supplies for Monte and I noticed that this very harness is currently on a 50% sale at Petstock, which is fantastic.

The Verdict: Three Years of Real-World Testing

This particular harness has been our go-to for the past three solid years. On a daily basis. It has been through the wash a million times, and we have taken it to the beach, up into the mountains, onto rugged trails, and on every cafe run in between.

  • Fit & Adjustability: We chose Size S (36–57 cm), which fit him perfectly. Because it is fully adjustable, it still fits him just as well today. The front chest piece sits at a good height and the straps are not too close to his front legs. It also fits snug enough that he has never managed to back out of it.
  • Trail & Utility Features: It features a handy top control handle, which is great for giving him a hand to get up or over obstacles on a trail.
  • Travel Ready: It feels secure and serves as a reliable car harness, especially on long road trips. Think of our 10-hour trip to Queensland, our recent coastal trip to Culburra Beach, or our various Blue Mountains adventures.

The minor Trade-offs & Real-World Caveats

  • Limited Colour Range: The colour range for this specific Explore style is limited, with only three options (vibrant red, blue, and the black I opted for). I honestly wish they offered a camo or earthy colours in this build.
  • Durability vs. Climate: The fabric and craftsmanship are second to none with zero loose stitching or worn buckles over three years. However, the durable fabric, while breathable, can get a little warm in summer. In contrast, when it gets wet in winter, it can hold moisture and get smelly easily if it doesn’t dry fast enough.
  • Over-the-Head Fit: It slips over his head easily once adjusted. But because it is snug around his fluffy ears, he isn’t always a fan of taking it off.

What’s Next?

These are the only reasons why I explored other alternatives while I was in Europe. I actually brought a brand back that I had never seen in our local shops.
