When your shadow is a four-year-old Miniature American Shepherd who is a ‘constant thinker’ with beans in his bum, a simple coffee run is never just a coffee run. Monte is always front and centre.

Because his brain is permanently switched on, impromptu coffee stops do not really exist. Our strategy starts long before we approach a table by mapping out routes where his senses are fully engaged first.

The Strategy Before the Sit-Down: The Lake Loop

What makes this pocket of Norwest work so well is the immediate environment. Set right by the water, the wrap-around pathway is absolute gold for a curious dog.

On any given lap around the lake, Monte gets to take in ducks, fish, occasional black swan sightings, water dragons sunning themselves on the rocks, and even little turtles breaking the surface.

By the time we step toward the cafe, his mental curiosity has found a healthy outlet through sheer observation and a proper sniffary.

We always include one final pit stop at the nearby grass pocket. This lets him burn off residual physical energy before we cross over for coffee.

Why Lakeside Cafe Is Our Go-To

The cafe sits right by the water. Although the area can get quite busy during peak times, the owner Naveen and the staff always go out of their way to arrange a table for us. Alternatively, you can always grab a takeaway and settle on one of the many benches scattered along the lake loop.

With the recent opening of the new Norwest Quarter retail precinct, there are definitely more dining choices popping up. But even with the new options on our doorstep, we still default straight back to Lakeside Cafe. Nestled by open water, it offers a relaxed vibe compared to sitting between new high-rises, which feels confined and less setteling for Monte.

What I Love Most About This Place

A Relaxed Atmosphere: Despite sitting in the heart of a business park, it feels genuinely peaceful. Lake views, water reflections, and surrounding palm trees make every visit enjoyable.

Thoughtful Spacing: Outdoor tables are well spaced. Monte gets plenty of room to settle comfortably without feeling crowded, helping him watch the world go by.

The Regular Treatment: While the cafe lacks a dedicated dog menu, Monte is a favourite regular. Staff know ‘his order’ instantly and look after him with his favourite cup of milk.

Our Go-To Bite: We usually order the raisin toast. Baked on a light focaccia-style bread, it hits the spot without feeling too heavy. Beyond that, the menu offers healthy choices and rotating weekly specials.

Practical Tips for Visiting Lakeside Cafe

  • Seating Choices: Indoor and undercover options sit along a corridor leading to the high-rise entrance, keeping things surprisingly cool in summer. There are also open-air tables shaded by trees and umbrellas if you prefer to soak up the morning sun.
  • Parking Options: Street parking and a large car park are nearby. But the real insider bonus is pulling straight into the undercover car park adjacent to the cafe for up to two hours of free parking.

Extending the Outing: Up to Bella Vista Farm

If you want to turn a quick coffee stop into a proper morning out, you can head up Norwest Boulevard toward Bella Vista Farm.

It is a complete shift in scenery, trading modern glass and concrete for expansive heritage parklands. Dogs can truly stretch their legs across acres of open green space. You can read our full write-up on the farm here.

A Layer of Local History

This walk is where old and new collide. Long before Norwest transformed into a sleek commercial hub, this entire pocket of land was shaped by early colonial grants and sprawling 19th-century citrus orchards managed by the Pearce family.
The lake itself was thoughtfully engineered as part of the area’s modern master-plan, turning former agricultural acreage into the open waterfront pathway we walk today. Bridging Sydney’s past and present in a single morning stroll.
