Monte – Life with a Mini American Shepherd

A medium-shot portrait of Monte, a brown Miniature American Shepherd with a white chest and fluffy ears, sitting on a bed of pine needles and mulch. His tongue is slightly out, and he is looking off-camera with an alert, happy expression. Bright, low-angled sunlight illuminates him against a backdrop of green trees and a clear blue sky. He is wearing a dark, textured harness with a metal tag.

Monte is a Mini American Shepherd, and in our house, we call him the “Constant Thinker.” He doesn’t just walk; he observes. He doesn’t just play; he problem-solves. While his intelligence is one of the things I love most about him, it also means that my approach to his daily essentials has to be a little more strategic.

Coming from a European background, I have always appreciated a “job-first” mentality when it comes to dogs. In Austria, a bored dog is a restless dog. Here in Australia, with so many wide-open spaces to explore, it is easy to think that a long walk is enough.

But for a breed like Monte’s, physical exercise is only half the story. To keep a “Constant Thinker” happy, you have to tire out their mind.

I have spent a lot of time trial-testing products to find what actually works for a smart, high-energy dog. I look for three things:

  1. Durability: It has to survive a Shepherd’s enthusiasm.
  2. Engagement: Does it actually make him think, and if yes, for how long?
  3. Simply Stylish: Does it look good in our home and on our adventures?

Whether it is a puzzle toy that keeps him busy while I am working or a high-quality food that fuels his active brain, I have realised that the best finds are the ones that are practically designed and built to last.

Living with a smart dog is an adventure that pushes you to be more creative and far more intentional with the things you bring into your life. It isn’t about just staying busy; it is about finding a practical balance that respects his intelligence and fits our daily reality.

As I document our life together, I will continue to share our most reliable finds and travels in the other sections of this site:

  • Practical Essentials: A collection of our favourite well-made finds. These are the hard-wearing, thoughtfully designed items that are built to last and have officially passed the “Monte Test.”
  • The Serendipity Series: Tracking our favorite dog-friendly cafes, stays, and hidden gems we have come across while exploring Australia.

For us, it is about the smart, practical choices, – whether it is a clever store-bought puzzle or a simple cardboard box or empty toilet roll, that make life with a Constant Thinker move a little bit easier.
