If you have followed along for a while, you probably know how conscious I am about keeping a clean home. From day one, I have been hyper-sensitive to ensuring our house never ‘smells of dog’. That is why I transitioned to quality, fully washable dog beds as quickly as possible.
Monte’s proud bed portfolio goes through the wash periodically, and I apply that exact same low-maintenance philosophy to the rest of our living space.

We have polished hardwood floors throughout the house. While they are fantastic for keeping things clean and hygienic, they can present quite a hazard in a multi-pet household. With Monte being a Miniature American Shepherd (a herding dog with no sheep but two cats), he loves to satisfy his instincts when the mood strikes. When he gets into full swing, he literally slides around corners. Given his bilateral luxating patellas, this kind of sliding can be risky business, prompting me to look for a multi-purpose solution.

That search led me down the digital rabbit hole to the concept of washable carpets. While plenty of brands claim to be washable, standard washing machines have capacity limits. Unless you own an industrial-sized drum, an average-sized washing machine will not get you very far, not to mention the drying challenge. It was the exact same hurdle I faced when vetting our walking gear and harnesses.

I had zero intention of taking my rug on a field trip to the local laundromat.

I kept searching until I found a product that ticked every single box: Ruggable.

Why I Chose the Ruggable Two-Piece System

Real-World Performance & Practical Testing

Getting used to the system is straightforward as long as you follow the care instructions. Because the covers are engineered for a precision fit, washing them too hot could lead to shrinkage, making it tricky to align the velcro backing into the outer pockets. Respecting the temperature guidelines keeps everything working smoothly.

Stain Resistance & Spot Cleaning

The material is remarkably forgiving when it comes to spot cleaning. As you likely know, I give Monte frozen carrots or chicken necks regularly as part of his dental care routine. With any ordinary carpet, letting him nibble away on it would be out of the question because he inevitably leaves bright orange residue behind. To my absolute surprise, those marks lift right out with just a touch of woolwash and a damp cloth.

Safety & Joint Protection

Since laying down the runner, Monte no longer slips and slides through the kitchen during his herding zoomies. It provides just enough traction on our polished hardwood floors for active movement, while also offering wonderful comfort when he settles down on the rug for daily obedience training or mental enrichment workouts like puzzle toys. Most importantly, it provides genuine peace of mind for his patellas.

Washing & Drying Routine

The overlay is wonderfully thin and lightweight, sliding into my standard washing machine without a struggle. I spin it on a high setting, and it never comes out as a crinkly, misshapen mess. It dries exceptionally fast, meaning downtime between washes is minimal.

Durability Over Time

After washing these covers what feels like a million times over the past three years, the quality continues to live up to its promises, showing next to no wear. I did experience a minor design hiccup when the outer edge stitching came loose in a couple of spots. However, after reaching out to the customer support team, it was replaced without any hassle, which speaks volumes for their post-sales care.

Storage and Rotation

The ease of care and washability has been an absolute game-changer.
I never have to worry about funky pet smells or stubborn stains. It is an investment worth making, though I can see how collecting designs can become quite addictive!

I rotate my two sets regularly. When not in use, the spare set rolls up effortlessly, taking up less space than a yoga mat and hiding away neatly in my chest of drawers.

Final Verdict: Would I Recommend It?

Granted, a rug might not be the typical item you expect to see featured here, but it has become such an invaluable staple in our home that I would never turn back.

The experience has been so positive that I plan to replace all my traditional carpets with this system over time.

For the kitchen, I opted for the thin underlay, which has been ideal. However, when it is eventually time to update the carpet in our living room, I think I will step up to the plush underlay version for extra cushioning underfoot.

If you are tired of lingering pet odors, slipping paws, and high-stress cleaning sessions, this system is well worth exploring. Just remember to wait for one of their regular sales before purchasing!
